SUVA, Fiji (3 July 2002) -- An oil tanker registered in Vanuatu has run aground threatening an ecological disaster in Fiji's most renowned diving and tourist resort area.

The Great Teresa ran aground at Navula Passage, some five hours after leaving Nadi's Vuda ship terminal.

The Navula Passage is in the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands and boasts some of the Fiji's most pristine reefs and best diving sites.

Fiji Navy Commander Viliame Naipoto told CDNN the tanker is not leaking oil but will be extremely difficult to salvage due to inadequate equipment.

"The salvage of the vessel poses a very high risk of oil spillage which we unfortunately are not adequately equipped for, which is something we lack seriously," Naipoto said.
