SUVA, Fiji (5 July 2002) -- Salvage crews will attempt what is being described as a "delicate" operation to pull a grounded oil tanker off a reef in one of Fiji's most beautiful diving and tourist resort areas. The Vanuatu-registered tanker was bound for the Australian territory of Norfolk Island when it ran aground in stormy seas five hours out of Vuda terminal just north of the international airport at Nadi. Fiji Navy Commander Viliame Naipoto told CDNN Fiji faces a major ecological disaster if the salvage operation fails and warned that international experts will have to be called in if there is an oil spill. | | Officials said they did not know how much oil The Great Theresa is carrying but plan to offload all of it before attempting to pull the ship off the reef. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORKSCUBA FORUMDISCUSS THIS TOPIC - Dive in and have your say at Scuba Forum |
