SUVA, Fiji (6 July 2002) -- The grounded oil tanker The Great Theresa has been refloated and a major ecological disaster was narrowly averted in the renowned Yasawa Islands of western Fiji.

Navy officials told CDNN the Vanuatu-registered tanker was successfully pulled off the reef and the captain and crew are safe.

There was only slight damage to the vessel and an oil spill was averted.

The "Great Theresa" hit the reef at Navula Passage in the Yasawa islands, renowned for many of Fiji's best dive sites.
