LOMBOK, Indonesia (4 Jan 2001) -- Nine people have been hacked to death and three others seriously wounded on the holiday island of Lombok near Bali.

Villagers armed with machetes and home-made firearms attacked a nearby village as a dispute over ownership of radio equipment erupted into violence.

A year ago, tourists were forced to flee Lombok Island when the Muslim majority started attacking members of the Christian minority.

Indonesia

During the past two years, civil unrest and fighting have swept across Indonesia and forced thousands to flee sectarian and inter-communal violence.
