SUVA, Fiji (23 Feb 2001) -- Geoffrey Robertson, the attorney who won the original High Court ruling against the legitimacy of the army-backed government, told the Court of Appeal the interim administration intended to disenfranchise and subordinate a racial group, one that happens to be 40 percent of the population. Robertson said the racist nature of the political changes contravene international laws. "It is submitted that the court ought to take into account the fact that the Interim Civilian Government breaches basic democratic principles accepted in Fiji and internationally by seeking to displace an elected government chosen by the people of Fiji in accordance with the democratically established Constitution. | | Racist rebel George Speight "The 1997 Constitution was developed in consultation with all Fijian communities and is underpined by a respect for Fijian democracy that is inclusive of all sections of the community and operated for the benefit of the rights and aspirations of all segments of Fijian society." © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORK |
