SAN PEDRO, Ambergris Caye, Belize (1 Apr 2002) -- To meet the increasing demand for emergency medical care for decompression illness, Subaquatics of Belize Ltd is upgrading its hyperbaric chamber facilities located next to Maya Island Air in San Pedro.

According to Antonia Guerrero of Subaquatics, the old building that housed the hyperbaric chamber will be replaced by a modern two-story facility.

During the construction of the new facility, the hyperbaric chamber will remain operational until the final phase of construction, which is expected to take about two weeks.

Subaquatics has treated over 325 dive injuries in Belize since it established Central America's first decompression illness medical facility in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye in 1989. It now operates hyperbaric chambers in Belize, Cancun, Cozumel and the Bahamas.
