COLCHESTER, Vermont (28 Aug 2002) -- A New York woman died after completing a PADI Advanced course dive on the wreck of the Phoenix in Lake Champlain.

Darla Grasso, 51, of Grand Island, New York, was participating in the advanced diving course conducted by Victory Sports, a PADI 5-Star dive center based in Colchester, Vermont.

According to U.S. Coast Guard officials who responded to an emergency call, Grasso experienced breathing problems after ascending from a dive to 26-meters (85-feet).

Victory Sports staff divers attempted to revive Grasso before the Coast Guard arrived at the scene of the accident.

Grasso was pronounced dead at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vermont.
