USA (12 Oct 2002) -- At least 182 people are dead and 300 injured after a terrorist bomb blast ripped through one nightclub and destroyed another at the Kuta Beach tourist resort in Bali, a popular scuba diving destination in Indonesia. So far, scores of victims from Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, Sweden and the United States have been confirmed dead after a huge explosion destroyed the popular Sari Club disco and Paddy's Bar at about midnight. Many of the victims died in a huge blaze that spread to adjacent buildings and vehicles after the explosion. Witnesses described scenes of chaos and horrible carnage. "It was awful, like something you'd see out of Vietnam--there were bodies everywhere," British tourist Matt Noyce told reporters. "It was pretty dark but you could tell some people were really badly injured--lots of blood everywhere, people with burns, some people with limbs that just, well, just terrible, terrible injuries." Richard Poole, a cameraman for a New Zealand television company told reporters most tourists are trying to leave Bali. "It is just terrifying - I have never seen so many people so badly burnt. It was just awful," Poole said. | | Rescuers are still digging charred bodies out of the debris. So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks including Jemaah Islamiyah, an Indonesia-based militant group linked to the Al Qaida terrorist network that is seeking to establish a Muslim state in Southeast Asia. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORKSCUBA FORUMDISCUSS THIS TOPIC - Dive in and have your say at Scuba Forum |
