DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (12 Oct 2002) -- The obsession with competitive records has claimed another free diver as Audrey Mestre-Ferraras, wife of Cuban free diver Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras, died attempting to break her husband's free diving record. Mestre-Ferreras died while trying to reach a target depth of 171 meters (561.5-feet) using a pulley and a weighted sled. Divers pulled her body out of the water nine minutes after she went down but medics called to the scene were unable to revive her. "Break my record or die trying baby--either way I get rich off of the movie deal..." | | Mestre-Ferreras was trying to break her husband's record of 162-meters (531.5-feet), a depth more than 30-meters (100-feet) deeper than her previous record-setting dive of 130-meters (426.5-feet) set last year at the Ocean Fest scuba diving festival held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Sponsors of the dive, including representatives of Mares dive equipment company, said they didn't know what happened. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORKSCUBA FORUMDISCUSS THIS TOPIC - Dive in and have your say at Scuba Forum |
