Australians urged to leave Indonesia

ADELAIDE, Australia (23 Dec 2002) -- The government of Australia has issued a new travel warning urging Australians to leave Indonesia immediately.

Australia's travel warning includes Bali, a popular scuba diving destination, and follows similar Indonesia travel warnings issued by the United States and Britain.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says there is new intelligence information of a possible terrorist attack over the year-end holidays.

Australians who are not able to leave the country are being warned to exercise extreme caution due to increased threat of bombings and kidnapping targeting foreign tourists.

"The new information focuses on possible terrorist action over the Christmas-New Year period," Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lyndall Sachs told reporters. "There's been no change in the level of advice," she said.

Bali terrorist attack
In October, nearly 200 people died when terrorists bombed Kuta Beach resort in Bali.

"What we've done is draw to the attention of the Australian public that there are threats against Australians and Australian interests in Indonesia, that they remain high and particularly over the Christmas-New Year period Australians should defer all non-essential travel."
