LOWDEN, Iowa (26 Jan 2003) -- Rescue authorities have recovered the bodies of two scuba divers who died after becoming trapped under ice. The two divers, Kevin Michael Petersen, 31, and Tracy Michael Humphreys, 30, were scuba diving at Wendling Quarry in eastern Iowa. A friend notified authorities at approximately 8:00pm Saturday evening that the divers were missing and the Bettendorf fire department began a search. Six hours later at 1:00am on Sunday morning, the search was called off due to extreme cold. Later on Sunday morning, the search resumed and the divers were found in full scuba gear within 30 feet of each other. According to Antarctica expedition diver and Cyber Diver Society President, Evan T. Allard, ice diving has become popular with tech divers who seek more extreme diving experiences. "Advances in cold water diving equipment coupled with the growth of tech diving has boosted the popularity of ice diving," explained Allard. "There certainly are additional risks but with proper training, appropriate equipment and careful dive planning, ice diving is relatively safe." © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORK |
