Powered by CDNN - CYBER DIVER News Network

STEWART ISLAND, New Zealand (26 Feb 2003) -- A 44-year-old man is in hospital with extensive arm lacerations after being attacked by a shark near Stewart Island.

The police say Alistair Kerr was scuba diving with another person around midday on Thursday and was on the surface when he was attacked by a mako shark estimated to be about 2.5 metres long.

As he tried to reach the safety of his dive boat, the shark circled and came back twice.

Kerr was taken onto the dive boat and met at Half Moon Bay by a district nurse.

The police say he was conscious and in a stable condition when he was flown to Southland Hospital for further treatment.
