Australia reissues Solomon Islands travel warning

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (10 Mar 2003) -- The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs has warned its citizens against traveling to the Solomon Islands.

An advisory on the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs website, which was issued earlier in the year and reissued today, advised its citizens to defer all holiday travels to Solomon Islands.

It adds that Australians living in the Solomons "should maintain a high level of personal security awareness and monitor developments that might affect their safety."

The foreign affairs department advised Australians to contact the Australian High Commission prior to traveling to Honiara, for purpose of update on the security situation.

The warnings against Solomon Islands stand alongside the likes of Iran, Afghanistan, and Cambodia, with the Solomons being singled out as the only Pacific island country to remain "unsafe."
