BUNBURY, Australia (13 Mar 2003) -- POLICE have warned divers to check their equipment after a Bunbury man died in a diving accident on Sunday.

Kurt Appelbee (25) was diving with a friend about four miles north of Bunbury, using a home-made hooka made of an air compressor and rubber tubing.

Police said Mr Appelbee's friend suddenly noticed him on the ocean floor and dragged him to the surface to try to revive him.

Ambulance officers were unable to resuscitate him when the boat reached shore.

Inspector George Loverock said hookas were popular for shallow diving near Bunbury.

Although police have not determined the cause of death, Insp Loverock said people should be careful using any diving equipment.
