SIPADAN, Malaysia (7 May 2003) -- A 24-year-old Russian tourist, Andrey Kornos Tave, was found dead while scuba-diving in Pulau Sipadan, Semporna, Tuesday.

Semporna OCPD, DSP Ariffin Ibrahim, said Tave arrived in Semporna last Thursday with three friends and was expected to return to Russia today (Wednesday).

The four, who were staying at a resort in Pulau Mabul, left early morning for Pulau Sipadan, a scuba-diving haven, a 20-minute boat ride from Semporna.

"The actual cause of his death has not been determined, but it is believed the victim dived too deep.

"We are waiting for the pathologist from Kota Kinabalu to ascertain the actual cause of his death," he said.

He said Tave's friends conducted a search around the area where they scuba-dived when he did not surface, but they failed to locate him.

His body was found floating about two hours later, he added.
