SARS prompts calls to cut Palau-Taiwan flights

Powered by CDNN - CYBER DIVER News Network

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (16 May 2003) -- There have been calls in Palau for air links to be cut to Taiwan because of SARS.

This is being demanded by lawmakers, business leaders and medical professionals who fear that Palau lacks the means to cope with a SARS outbreak.

Health officials say closing the borders to Taiwan will not remove the risk because Palau will still be connected via the Philippines and Guam.

The head of the Palau Bureau of Clinical Services, Gregory Dever, says it's more important to focus on preparation than on attempts to seal the border.
