New underwater housings for Olympus C-5060 digital camera

USA (10 Feb 2004) -- Olympus America wants owners of the recently issued C-5060 Wide Zoom digital camera to get the most from their new purchases.

The company has announced a line of accessories to expand creative possibilities with the C-5060, a 5.1-megapixel camera with a 4X aspherical glass zoom lens, a 3.5X digital zoom, and shutter speeds ranging from 1/4000 sec. - 16 sec. The C-5060 uses xD-Picture Card media and has a suggested retail price of $699.

One accessory takes photographers where they otherwise would not have ventured with the C-5060: beneath the waves. Priced at $339.95, the PT-020 is a new underwater housing that lets aquatic photographers take the C-5060 as deep as 130 ft. beneath the surface. Made of transparent polycarbonate, the PT-020 has red grips and levers for ease of use in dim light, and a fluorite glass lens window for clarity. An LCD hood on the back of the housing reduces glare caused by sunlight. Lubricated O-ring seals prevent leakage, and safety locks on the housing prevent accidental opening.

For those who wish to explore the undersea potential of the Olympus WCON-07C wide conversion lens, the company makes available a separate underwater housing wide-angle lens port, the PPO-02. For added illumination, Olympus also makes a separate underwater housing for the FL-20 electronic flash, featuring an integrated flash diffuser panel that cuts down on glare from particles suspended in the water. The FL-20 flash sells for $199 and is said to be "ideally suited for use with digital camera CCDs that are far more sensitive to light than analogue film." Olympus flash units mount directly to the camera's hot shoe.

The $43.95CLA-7 bayonet-mount conversion lens adaptor screws into the body of the camera and allows quick attachment of either the $199 WCON-07C wide-angle converter lens or the $199 TCON-17C teleconverter. The former reduces the focal length by 0.7x, while the latter increases it by 1.7x.

The new B-HLD20 is a power battery holder capable of containing two BLM-1 rechargeable batteries, allowing several hours of shooting time with the C-5060 Wide Zoom. It sells for $149.95 and also enables vertical portrait framing, thanks to its integrated shutter release button and zoom lever. BLM-1 batteries previously could be used only with Olympus E-series digital SLRs. The new battery holder makes them compatible with the C-5060. Also available is a BCM-1 two-hour battery charger. The C-5060 comes with a BCM-1, which charges the batteries overnight.
