JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (13 July 2004) -- A 52-year-old pothole fixer from Johannesburg will attempt to break the British-held world record for the deepest scuba dive. Nuno Gomes will try to break the existing record of 1026.9 feet (313 meters) set by Mark Ellyatt in 2003. Gomes, a veteran technical diver who has held the world record of 927 feet for the deepest cave dive since 1996, will attempt the new scuba diving depth record this week at Dahab near Sharm el-Sheikh in the Red Sea. When asked how a successful attempt will affect his life, Gomes replied: "What happens if I set a new world record? Nothing much. I'll have a rest, and get my name in The Guinness Book of Records again." | | South African technical diver Nuno Gomes When he's not diving or playing underwater hockey, Gomes is a civil engineer who repairs South Africa's motorway toll roads. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORK |
