Kauai scuba instructor diving again after losing leg

KUKUI'ULA, Kauai (10 Oct 2004) -- Never mind the fact that Matt Isham lost a portion of his leg to a boat propeller in a diving accident earlier this year.

He fully intends to return to his job at SeaSport Divers as a diving instructor, and Saturday took a quantum leap towards that goal, diving aboard a SeaSport craft with the surgeons who may have acted to save his life.

Chris Malone, general manager of SeaSport Divers in the Kukuiula Store complex on Po'ipu Road, took the men out diving Saturday, and fully supports his pal Isham's wish to return to work after a July 20 accident when he saved a visitor from death if not serious injury by pulling the visitor away from the boat's propellor while putting his own body in harm's way.

While the visitor sustained minor injuries to his arm, Isham lost part of his leg. To Malone and many others, Isham is a hero. The Saturday dive marked Isham's first trip back into the ocean since the accident.
