ROCHESTER, New York (8 Dec 2004) -- Scuba divers have found the wreck of a US Coast Guard boat that sank several miles east of Nine Mile Point in Lake Ontario on December 1, 1977.

The 56-foot 50-ton open-deck vessel, a converted 'LCM' landing craft, sank during a storm in 6-foot waves and 50-mph winds.

The Charlotte Coast Guard rescued the three-man crew but failed in their efforts to tow the listing cable boat back to safe harbor.

According to the divers who found the wreck, the boat landed stern first and remains semi-upright with the bow pointed up at the surface at a 45-degree angle.
