PHUKET, Thailand (26 Dec 2004) -- Several scuba divers are among the dead and scores more are missing after a massive tsunami devastated coastal resort areas in southern Thailand.

As many as 80 divers may be trapped in renowned Emerald Cave, a popular diving and snorkeling site on Ko Muk Island, which is located about one hour by boat of the coast of Trang province.

Rescuers have reached the island and are trying to get divers and snorkelers out of the limestone cave.

Several dive center operators in the area told CDNN that boat crews and divers knew nothing about the tsunami until they returned to port and saw the devastation.

Typically tsunami waves are not perceptible at sea but form into huge destructive waves as they reach shallow coastal areas.
