COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (26 Dec 2004) -- The worst tsunami ever to hit Sri Lanka has killed more than 11,000 people including at least 200 tourists.

Sri Lankan rescue workers told CDNN that 22 bodies found in Yala national park are thought to be Japanese tourists.

Many more people have been reported missing and over a million people are homeless.

Sri Lanka is about 1,600 kilometers from the earthquake epicenter, however, huge tidal waves hit the south and east coasts, flooding towns and villages and sweeping people out to sea.

On Sunday, a huge earthquake off northeast Indonesia triggered the deadly tsunami waves.

Giant tidal waves also slammed into Thailand, southern India, Myanmar, Malaysia and the Maldives.
