ANCHORAGE, Alaska (7 June 2006) -- Rescuers were unable to find a young humpback whale on Wednesday who had been tangled in the lines and buoys of a crab pot in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. The whale was followed for about nine hours Tuesday before crews quit trying to cut the line. Officials believed orange buoys attached to the lines would make the whale easy to spot. "We had a plane out all morning, had good flying conditions and we felt we would have seen the whale with the buoys attached if it was out there, but didn't see it," said Chuck Young, chief ranger at the national park in Southeast Alaska. It's possible that the whale freed itself from the lines. However, if it was still tangled, its future was uncertain. Humpback whales are an endangered species. | | The search was expected to continue Thursday. SOURCE - The Mercury News |
