JUNO BEACH, Florida (21 Mar 2009) — As sea turtles begin returning to Florida beaches for the nesting season, local officials are warning people to turn off the lights.
Bright lights near beaches can disorient and ultimately kill nesting sea turtles.
Many cities and counties in Florida have adopted regulations aimed at protecting marine turtles during the long nesting season from March 1 to October 31.
In coastal communities throughout the state, environmental management officials have scheduled events to spread the message about turning off lights to help protect sea turtles.
One of the events will take place on March 30 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet.
