PATIKUL, Jolo Island, Philippines (14 May 2000) -- Abu Sayyaf guerrillas issued demands which set the conditions for the beginning of negotiations to release 21 foreign hostages abducted from Sipadan Island. The rebels are demanding a complete withdrawal of government troops from the area on Jolo Island where they are holding the hostages. The rebels are also demanding independence for the region and the establishment of Islamic law.
