SUVA, Fiji (21 May 2000) -- Racist rebel leader George Speight who is holding Fiji Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and his cabinet hostage demanded that Chaudry step down.

At a press conference in the Fiji parliament, Speight angrily denied reports that he is threatening to execute hostages.

"To suggest that we would embark on such an operation as a solution is just irresponsible and crazy," Speight said.  "I am giving the world my word, I am guaranteeing their safety."
