Muslim rebels snub negotiators

JOLO, Philippines (22 May 2000) -- Abu Sayyaf rebel leaders snubbed chief negotiator Roberto Aventajado who waited for four hours at a prearranged meeting point near the rebel camp.

The setback is the latest in a series of delays that have failed to produce a meeting between rebel leaders and government negotiators who are trying to win the release of 21 hostages abducted from Sipadan one month ago.

The rebels have moved the hostages out of the jungle and into houses in rebel held territory on Jolo Island.
