SUVA, Fiji (23 May 2000) -- Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs will meet today to decide whether they will support George Speight's coup attempt. Because the Council of 50 chiefs wields great power in Fijian society and politics, their decision could determine the outcome of the attempted coup. Coup leader George Speight has said he will release the hostages and end the coup attempt if the Council decides not to support him. Police and military forces remain loyal to President Mara who has denounced the coup but has been ambiguous about supporting Prime Minister Chaudhry. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORK |
