SUVA, Fiji (31 May 2000) -- Rebel leader George Speight rejected former soldier and diplomat Ratu Epeli Nailatikau as Fiji's interim prime minister.

Nailatikau was selected by military rulers who seized the government a little more than a week after Speight stormed into Fiji's parliament and took Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and his cabinet ministers hostage.

Nailatikau is married to Adi Mara who Speight has threatened to kill according to Australian government officials.  Adi Mara is Fiji's Tourism Minister and the daughter of President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.  Mara stepped down on May 29 to allow the military to take over.

So far, all of Speight demands have been met including the removal of Prime Minister Chaudhry and President Mara, amnesty and an agreement for constitutional changes that will prohibit Fijians of Indian descent from holding key political offices.
