SUVA, Fiji (6 June 2000) -- Military leaders are ignoring racist rebel leader George Speight and proceeding with the establishment of a new government.

"I am not budging on the crisis. We are no longer listening to their demands," said military commander Frank Bainimarama.

Bainimarama issued an ultimatum to rebel soldiers telling them to drop their weapons and return to their barracks or lose their commissions. Three rebel soldiers left the parliament where Speight is holding 30 hostages including Fiji's prime minister.

Speight was defiant. "If I was Bainimarama, I would be very concerned about having someone back in my camp who is such a staunch supporter of mine," Speight said.

Speight also threatened to kill the hostages if the military storms the parliamentary complex.
