Fiji soldiers, rebels exchange shots

SUVA, Fiji (7 June 2000) -- Rebels caught looting houses near the parliamentary complex exchanged gunfire with soldiers.

One of the rebels was caught but the rest escaped and fled back into the parliament building where racist rebel leader George Speight is holding 30 hostages.

No one was wounded in the first serious clash between the military and rebel group.
