SUVA, Fiji (11 June 2000) -- Over 100 supporters of rebel leader George Speight went on another rampage burning down a restaurant near the parliamentary complex where Speight is holding 31 hostages. Coup supporters have been camping in the complex from where they have been looting homes and businesses for the past three weeks. "It's not safe. They are armed with knives, " said one soldier. Before the rioting, Speight issued a statement that no hostages would be released until his demands for a civilian government ruled by indigenous Fijians are met. "We will not be deterred by arguments based on democracy and multiculturalism," Speight said. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORK | | As lawlessness and racist violence spread across Fiji, dive operators chant: "Let's go diving!" |
