Military, rebels resume talks to release hostages

SUVA, Fiji (14 June 2000) -- Military leaders and rebels will resume talks aimed at freeing Fiji's prime minister and 30 other politicians held hostage since May 19.

Although the military expressed optimism that talks would soon resolve the crisis, there are still fundamental differences between the two sides.

Rebel leader George Speight is demanding a role in the new government but the military has made it clear that Speight and his gang will not be allowed to participate in the interim government.

Despite a sharp decline in tourist arrivals, local dive operators are attempting to dismiss the coup as a Suva problem that will not impact the rest of Fiji.
