SUVA, Fiji (14 June 2000) -- Although racist rebel leader George Speight is demanding a role in the new interim government, the military announced it will bar Speight and his followers from the administration.

The military said it plans to establish an interim government which will hold power for three months until elections can be held.

Speight is demanding that Fiji's tribal chiefs appoint the new administration and that the military be excluded from participating in the establishment of the interim government.

The crisis has crippled Fiji's economy and angered both indigenous Fijians and Fijians of Indian descent.
