HONIARA, Solomon Islands (16 June 2000) -- Rebels in the Solomon Islands have agreed to return control of Honiara to the police.

Andrew Nori, leader of the Malaita Eagles Force (MEF) said the peace deal must include compensation for Malaitans who have been forced off their land by a rival militia group called the Isatabu Freedom Movement (IMF).

Andrew Tee, a leader of the IMF said it was wrong for a democratically elected prime minister to forced out of office by armed rebels but agreed to keep the peace as long as the MEF did.

The IFM was formed about a year and a half ago to force Malaitans out of Guadalcanal. The MEF was set up in retaliation against IMF rebels.
