HONIARA, Solomon Islands (22 June 2000) -- Rival militia leaders fighting for control of Guadalcanal have made progress in securing a cease-fire.

The leaders met aboard an Australian navy ship to discuss ways to secure peace in the troubled Solomon Islands.

"I cannot reveal the contents of the talks, but I can tell you it was very productive, very good, said Andrew Nori, leader of the MEF militia.

The MEF and the IFM militia groups have been fighting over control of Guadalcanal for the last 18 months.
