SUVA, Fiji (23 June 2000) -- Rebels and military officials have reached an agreement that is expected to pave the way for the release of Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and 30 other political prisoners.

The breakthrough in stalled negotiations came when the military caved in to Speight's demand that the Great Council of Chiefs appoint an interim administration that will replace the military government in less than a month.

The military wanted to maintain power for a longer period to ensure law and order. Martial law has been in effect for over a month.

The terms of the accord, which will be signed tomorrow give considerable power to Speight's group. Members of the group are expected to be appointed to the new administration.
