SUVA, Fiji (30 June 2000) -- After cutting off rebels from participation in appointing a new civil government, the military is now cutting off the parliamentary complex where rebels are holding 27 politicians hostage. Coup supporters and residents in the area have been removed and the military plans to cut off electricity, water and food supplies to the complex. Military leaders have restated their policy of a non-violent solution to the crisis but some have called for the military to use force to end the standoff. Sitiveni Rabuka, who led the 1987 coup and became prime minister has urged the military not to rule out using force to free the hostages. The attempted coup has ruined Fiji's economy and forced the Sheraton, Forbes Island and other resorts to close. | | Fiji military cut off rebels Thousands have been layed off since May 19 when rebels stormed into into Fiji's parliamentary complex. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORK |
