HONIARA, Solomon Islands (30 June 2000) -- Politicians will gather aboard an Australian Navy vessel today to elect a new Prime Minister.

The emergency vote was originally scheduled for Wednesday but over half of the politicians boycotted the meeting because of safety fears.

The HMAS Tobruk has been anchored off of Honiara since evacuating hundreds of expats after an attempted coup.

Rebels have threatened to escalate violence if a new prime minister is not elected.
