HONIARA, Solomon Islands (1 July 2000) -- Opposition party leader Manasseh Sogavare has been elected new prime minister of the Solomon Islands.

Due to safety fears, the election was held aboard the HMAS Tobruk, an Australian navy vessel anchored off the capital city of Honiara.

Sogavare said the new administration will address the crisis that has erupted into violent clashes between rival militia groups who are fighting for control of Guadalcanal.

Sogavare will replace Bartholomew Ulufa'alu who was taken hostage on June 5 by rebels who demanded and won his resignation.
