SUVA, Fiji (10 July 2000) -- Racist rebel leader George Speight and the military have reached yet another agreement. Military leaders agreed to allow Fiji's chiefs to choose a new administration that will replace the interim government appointed by the military a week ago. Many analysts believe the chiefs will act as a rubber stamp for Speight whose racist agenda appears to have widespread support among indigenous Fijians. According to the agreement, the hostages will be released on Thursday, July 13 but many have expressed concern Speight will again renege on his promises. FROM PARADISE TO PARIAH As Fiji stumbles back into racism and tribalism the international community is threatening to isolate the island nation with economic sanctions if democracy and equality is not restored. | | Tourists are urged to leave Fiji Fiji's economy has collapsed, hotels have shut down and thousands have been laid off in the tourist industry which is losing over $1m per day. Although efforts are already underway to rehabilitate Fiji's tourist industry once the hostages are released, it is unlikely discount packages will persuade tourists to return to a country constitutionally committed to racism. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORK |
