SUVA, Fiji (29 July 2000) -- Rebel leader George Speight and six of his top aides who sought to strip Indo-Fijians of their political rights, have been sent to a prison island near Suva that was once used as a quarantine station for indentured Indian workers.

According to military officials, the facilities on Nukulau Island are basic with poor plumbing. The entire island and surrounding waters have been declared a "no-entry" prison zone.

The military has also issued an ultimatum to rebels in Labasa, Vanua Levu to vacate the army barracks they seized by midnight Sunday or face drastic action. The rebels are holding several soldiers hostage.

The military finally cracked down after Speight threatened new president Josefa Iloilo over appointments to the new administration.  Speight is now being investigated for treason which carries the death penalty.
