HONIARA, Solomon Islands (2 August 2000) -- Rival tribal militias have again failed to agree to a ceasefire.

The agreement was to have been signed by MEF and IFM rebel leaders but the MEF rejected the deal at the last minute saying they wanted control of lands around Honiara that currently held by the IFM.

The deal was to be signed aboard the HMAS Tobruk, an Australian navy vessel that has been anchored off the Solomon Islands since it was sent to evacuate foreign residents on June 8.

It is hope the agreement will stop fighting that has killed more than 60 and left thousands homeless in the Solomons.
