HONIARA, Solomon Islands (3 August 2000) -- After many delays, rival tribal militias have agreed to sign a 90-day ceasefire that will begin within 48 hours.

Leaders of the Isatabu (IFM) and Malaitan (MEF) tribal groups signed the agreement onboard the Australian navy ship, HMAS Tobruk which is anchored off the capital of Honiara where most of the fighting has been centered.

Both sides have agreed to establish a ceasefire monitoring council and begin formal peace talks.
