SUVA, Fiji (5 Aug 2000) -- Rebel leader George Speight appeared in court and was denied bail and sent back to Nukulau island prison.

Speight and 12 of his key associates appeared in court surrounded by armed soldiers.

Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, Joe Naigulevu, opposed bail on grounds of public safety and the likelihood that more serious charges will be brought against Speight.

Authorities are investigating possible treason charges against Speight which carries the death penalty.
