Some Sipadan hostages could be released next week

TALIPAO, Philippines (3 August 2000) -- Three Malaysians and two South Africans could be released early next week.

The hostages are part of a group abducted from a Sipadan Island diving resort over three months ago.

Negotiators said that arrangements have been completed for the release of five of the hostages meaning that ransom amounts have been agreed to.

Huge ransom payments ranging from $350,000 to $1m have been paid for the release of seven hostages who were freed earlier.
