HONIARA, Solomon Islands (14 Aug 2000) -- New Zealand has agreed to a Solomons government request for support in conducting peace talks between rival militias.

New Zealand will send a navy vessel to Honiara to provide a secure, neutral venue for ongoing discussions to end bitter fighting between tribal factions.

Both the IFM and MEF militias have agreed to a ceasefire but the situation remains extremely volatile.
