JOLO, Philippines (1 Sep 2000) -- Muslim rebels are demanding $10m for the release of 24-year-old American, Jeffrey Schilling.

Schilling was abducted soon after Abu Sayyaf rebels freed six more dive tourists who were abducted from a Sipadan Island scuba resort on April 23.

According to government officials, the rebels received $6m from Libya for the release of the six foreigners and $4.5 from Malaysia for the release of nine Malaysians who were also abducted from Sipadan.

Six other foreign dive tourists kidnapped from Sipadan are still being held in a rebel camp deep in the jungle of Jolo Island in the southern Philippines.

The US has ruled out any deals or ransom payments for Schilling's release.
