SUVA, Fiji (4 Sep 2000) -- Failed businessman and racist rebel leader George Speight arrived in court with a packed suitcase ready to go home. But Fiji chief magistrate, Sailesi Temo, ordered Speight and his 16 co-conspirators to go back to the island prison where they have been incarcerated since they failed to take over Fiji's government. Speight's lawyers have argued that his arrest and indictment on charges of treason should be overturned because he was granted amnesty under a peace deal signed in July. But the judge said he had been ordered by Fiji's High Court not to rule on the matter. Speight and his cronies looked shocked when they heard the decision. The High Court will rule on the immunity decree on Friday. | | Racist rebel leader George Speight Although many indigenous Fijians support Speight's racist agenda, there has been strong condemnation from the international community led by Australia which has warned Fiji that there will be more sanctions if Speight is allowed to walk free. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORK |
