WESTERN AUSTRALIA (24 Nov 2000) -- Howard Rodd has vowed never to go in the water again after surviving 24 hours adrift in the sea off southwestern Australia in an area where great white sharks are common.

Rodd was diving for abalone when his boat capsized 15 kilometers off the coast.  A second diver on the boat, Danny Thorpe, is still missing.

Local authorities launched a search and rescue mission but were unable to find either of the two divers.

Despite strong currents, Rod finally managed to swim ashore a day after his boat sank.  Local officials described his survival as a miracle.
